History

Live Oak's history remains a bit of a mystery. No one really knows when it was founded, but all estimates lie somewhere between 1850 and 1875. Live Oak started out as a resting area for railroad workers during this time. Eventually, the area started to grow and by 1885, Live Oak was a functioning town. Soon there came a man named Thomas Dowling who turned this small town into a city. He is accredited with almost completely designing and building the city of Live Oak. Thomas Dowling built and designed the courthouse, water tower, sewage system, water lines, and the famous Dowling house/The Grace Manor Restaurant.
